I initially purchased 3 shades but fell in love with this new cream-to-powder formula and ended up with all 5. These colors are sophisticated and refined basics that cover a wide spectrum and are also permanent. I think there is something for everyone.
Don't get me wrong. I still love the powdery and silky texture of the classic Joues Contraste and have many of them, but this new formula is a perfect addition to the lineup especially if you enjoy creamy textures yet don't want to fuss with a cream formula. I imagine this new formula will be amazing on drier and more mature skin types as well.
As you can see in the swatch photo above, the colors are well-pigmented (some are rather vibrant) and you can build up the colors quite a bit using your fingertips. These colors are velvety and creamy at the same time and very easy to sheer out as well. The finish is mostly satin.
My application preference is still using a brush, and this works as nicely as finger applications. I suppose you can use a sort of sponge applicator as well. I have made brush swatches with all 5 shades for your reference.
Chanel Joues Contraste Intense 232 Beige Éclatant ($52, Chanel)
Beige Éclatant is a light neutral beige that is perfect for a "no-blush blush" kind of effect.
Chanel Joues Contraste Intense 236 Grenat Profond ($52, Bloomingdale's)
Chanel Joues Contraste Intense 238 Rose Ardent ($52, Chanel)
Rose Ardent is a lovely light cool pink and probably the easiest to wear. Such a "demure" shade if you're into the recent makeup trends.
Chanel Joues Contraste Intense 242 Rose Radiant ($52, Chanel)
To me, Rose Radiant is the most Chanel-esque shade - a sophisticated rose with a slight warmth. I think this color would look beautiful on anyone. Such a versatile shade.
Chanel Joues Contraste Intense 244 Rouge Franc ($52, Chanel)
Rouge Franc is a stunning coral red with a clear undertone. This is the brightest shade among the five but thanks to its flexible formula, it is still quite wearable for my fair complexion.
I think Chanel did a great job introducing this amazing new formula with solid wearable shades. This makes a nice contrast to the upcoming fall/winter makeup collection (Clairvoyance Collection) which is quite unusual and edgy.
When it comes to luxury blushes, beautiful shades alone are not enough but they should be backed by a great formula, and the new Chanel Joues Contraste Intense makes a great example of that. I would highly recommend these new blushes.
The new Chanel Joues Contraste Intense is available on the Chanel website.
