About a month ago, I suddenly had this strong desire to own a "small travel-friendly eyeshadow palette with a good matte black". You see, it is a pretty specific thing. Fascinating how my desire to buy new makeup manipulates my brain. I am sure I knew on a subconscious level that I did not have one in my stash. However, knowing that I have too many eyeshadow palettes already, I wanted to be sensible so that I ordered a $5 palette that appeared tiny on target.com - 9 colors for $5, it's got to be tiny, right? Turns out that it was the BIGGEST palette I ever purchased (it contains whopping 4.4 oz if you're wondering). The Profusion Cosmetics palette swatched well and I honestly couldn't find anything wrong with it, but it wasn't what I wanted so I gave it away. I was $5 less sensible but the search continued. Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions was about the only one I could find with a matte black that's small and also reasonably priced. Then, I added the Mauve Obsessions to the basket convincing myself that I did not own a good pinkish palette (not true, by the way) and I was no longer sensible.
So, now I own 2 compact eyeshadow palettes from a brand that I previously overlooked. Intensely pigmented eyeshadows are not really my thing (I even find this one overwhelming although I adore the quality of it) and I am one of those who finds it hard to sit through a YouTube video, so the Huda Beauty range naturally had escaped my radar. Having said all that, I must admit that I really like these! For one thing, they are small yet contain as much as some of the full sized palettes.
Let's look at some photos first, though.
Smokey Obsessions is a cool neutral palette with metallic accents and an intense black. I find both the color combination and texture variation is brilliant, which makes the palette quite versatile. It is not easy to find a quality matte black but I am happy with this one as well. The silver shade is quite glittery and not without a few fallouts but feels creamy to touch and adheres on the skin nicely. No complaint here.
Mauve Obsessions is a great option if you like the reddish eye makeup trends but can't easily pull off warm shades. I can tell this would be stunning for many with lighter eyes or deeper complexions. I myself don't particularly think this is an easy palette to pull off and am still experimenting with different placements that wouldn't make my complexion look ghostly pale. I've had somewhat satisfactory results with bronzer and color contacts.
Overall I really enjoy playing with these small yet mighty palettes. I find these pigmented eyeshadows serviceable and even necessary under certain lighting situations (I've been filming a few videos lately and learned that my everyday makeup looks just don't cut it). Hopefully, I will show you a few looks with them in the coming weeks.
